40 Days of Prayer

A Guide to Daily Prayer

Fall more in love with the Lord as we intentionally seek him in prayer over these 40 days. Grow in your understanding of the power of prayer by engaging in its different forms. This prayer guide is divided into four, 10-day blocks, with distinct prayer practices for each section. Some practices might feel more familiar to you than others. Regardless, we hope that you will deepen your practice of prayer through this 40-day journey.

The Lord’s Prayer

August 28-September 6

(Matthew 6: 9-13)

For the next 10 days, you will have the opportunity to pray through the Lord’s Prayer. Starting each day by praying the entire Lord’s Prayer, and then going back and praying with a focus on one particular part of that prayer. Click on the date below to view that day’s prayer focus.

“Our Father”

What does it mean to pray like God is our Father?

“Who art in heaven”

Focus today on the God who is above all.

“Hallowed be thy name”

Your name is revered highest.

“Your Kingdom come”

God, we pray for your kingdom to come.

“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”

What would our world look like if heaven came down?

“Give us this day our daily bread”

What does it look like to trust the Lord to give us simply what we need, today?

“Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us”

We as people who have been forgiven much, seek to forgive as fully as well.

“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”

Help us, Lord, to lean into you and away from desires that keep us from following You. Help us remember you as we fast from the temptation of self-sufficiency.

This is the first Sunday of fasting.

“For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory”

Make our hearts believe, Lord. That you have all the authority.

“For ever and ever, amen”

Forever, Lord, we trust You and we praise You.

Intercessory Prayer

September 7-16

(Ephesians 6:18)

For the next 10 days, the invitation is simple yet powerful; we pray for one another. Each day you will be prompted to intercede for something specific in regards to the season in which we are walking through together at Covenant. As we seek God’s face together, we pray for one another.

Pray for a release of control and for complete trust in the Lord with all of our hearts.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Pray for our church body

Ask for respect and kindness to fill all members of our body and church leaders.

1 Peter 2:17

Pray that we will fully abide in Christ.

(both as individuals and as the church)

John 15:5

Ask God to call us to a deeper revelation of loving Him and loving others.

Mark 12: 30-31

Pray that we as a church body would boldly be the Kingdom’s salt and light for God’s glory and praise.

Matthew 5:11-16

2nd Sunday of fasting

Pray for our church leadership to be strengthened to hold fast to the confession of our hope and that they may work to stir up love and good works.

Hebrews 10:19-24

Pray that all formal and informal conversations and discussions are filled with words of grace, honor, love, and respect.

Ephesians 4:32

Pray that the Spirit of God would rest upon our church, that we may walk in the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, and the counsel of the Lord.

Isaiah 11:2

Pray for the grace and peace of God that surpasses all understanding to rest on us and guard our hearts and minds.

Philippians 4:6

Pray that we might love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbor as ourselves.

Luke 10:27

Listening Prayer

September 17-26

(Psalm 46:10)

For the next 10 days, there’s a leading to listen. We are invited to sit and take quiet moments to hear from the Lord—not ask of Him. Simply be with Him and be in His presence. You will be invited into different practices of seeking to listen to the Lord, knowing that any time spent with the Father is a balm for our souls.

Make a drive in your car one of complete silence. No music, podcast, conversation, etc. Think about the Lord and who He is to you.

Along with the fast for today, remove social media from your day. We turn off something in order to turn up the volume of God’s voice in our day today.

Third Sunday of Fasting

Get up 5 minutes earlier or stay up 5 minutes later and sit in silence in your car, room, closet, etc. Breath. Seek to be totally relaxed and still in His presence.

Go on a walk (or find someplace to sit outdoors) and gaze upon God’s creation as you seek to see Him in it.

Sit with the Lord and invite Him to bring to mind anything He wants to address with you.

Set a timer on your phone for 7 minutes. Think about the goodness of God in your life. Revel in the ways God has met you all throughout your life.

Invite the Lord’s presence right before you go to sleep. Allow His peace and rest to wash over you as you bask in Him.

Right when you wake up, invite the Lord to give you a word to think/meditate on all day long… not desiring to know all the reasons—the “why”—but simply receiving the gift of His invitation.

Along with our fast, remove TV/Netflix as a way to turn off the voice of the world and turn up the voice of God in our day.

4th Sunday of fasting.

Take out your Bible and read Psalm 139, ten times. Reflect on the ways the creator God has created you and us to dwell with Him.

Psalm 139

Prayer through Song

September 27-October 6

(Psalm 95:1)

For our last 10 days, we will pray by worshiping in song. Each day, you will be given a worship song to listen/worship to. As you worship, pray that God would make His presence and power known to you. Praise Him for who He is. Celebrate the truth that Our God is with us, for us, and not against us. Rejoice that He is good. Worship as we seek. Worship as we wait.
